In all my research lately on the new Web 2.0 Internet and social communities I am finding that people want content. In the old days of the internet you were not “cool” unless your site was flash and had those wicked boring intros. In this day and age people are looking for content and different ways to connect to their friends and meet new people. Also they want the content when they want it and how they get it.
Designers need to take a look at this and find ways to communicate differently. With the explosion of RSS, Video, ipods, iphones and mobile devices in general people are using these devices to receive their content. Everyone, is conditioning themselves to receive content when they want it or are ready to receive it. Case in point: TIVO, or PVR or DVRs most all of us have at home sitting on top of the t.v. I believe this is where it all has started and it is a long way from going anywhere.
Don’t get me wrong, there is still going to be a need for traditional graphic designers to design print material etc. But as a designer you really need to take a gut check and get your head into this new technology. I have seen and read about all the kids and I do mean kids out there pounding away on the keyboards and texting all of there friends. They know how this works and you can bet they are way ahead of the game than most people. If you don’t believe me the next time you are at, say the mall, really look and pay attention to these kids. THEY ALL are texting or reading info on these handheld devices.
As a designer, I have always been taught that it is our job to create attention first, lure in the end user and convince them to a call of action. This is no different. We just can’t use pretty pictures and nice type like we have in the past. We have to look at how people want to get information, and then figure out a way to get them to react. People are getting smarter on ads etc. we just need to change what we are doing so we can get the results that we are expecting.
Take time to look around on the web and just see how people are communicating. Now its our job to get our message out where they will see it.
Good luck, and take care
